VDProj to WiX Converter is released!

Only one month has passed since we published the first beta and here I am announcing the release of our new product – VDProj to WiX Converter.

If you have at least a couple of Visual Studio setup projects that you need to support and develop further, this tool is definitely worth trying.

Apart from bug fixes (many thanks to our beta testers Scott, David, Alexey and Stefan!) the release version adds support for web setup projects. And now I can proudly state that our Converter supports all features of Visual Studio and WiX setup projects, all project types (exe, msi, msm, web setups) and built-in dialogs, all variables and searches, files and registry entries, resources and prerequisites. Visual Studio 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005 are all supported.

Please note that we are not experts in the web installation area, though we did our best and tested all installation scenarios of simple ASP.NET web applications with several aspx and html pages containing plain C# and VB.NET code and java scripts. I am sure that real web applications are much bigger and more complex than our test ones, and we are keen to give our product the real field test with some huge and intricate web setup project :) Web developers, you are welcome!

I would like to try this out but I don’t want to lose my existing setup. How do I convert an existing setup to wix and leave the existing setup intact?

  • Dmitry Kostochko (Add-in Express Team) says:

    Hi,

You won’t lose your existing setup project. VDProj to WiX Converter adds a new WiX setup project to your existing Visual Studio solution.

  • Metro Sauper says:

Does the new Wix project continue to update itself when new content files are added to the other projects? With the VDProj setup, you could add files with a Build Action of “Content” and the files would automatically be included in the setup output. Does this continue to work, or will we need to explicitly include each new content file after the project is migrated to Wix?

  • Dmitry Kostochko (Add-in Express Team) says:

If your initial Visual Studio Setup project (.vdproj) had the “Content Files” project output then, the converted WiX project should work properly after adding new content files.

  • Deepak says:

I have converted my .vdproj to wix project but the service coding of installer file is not running after installation time. Please reslove it.

  • Dmitry Kostochko (Add-in Express Team) says:

    Hi Deepak,

I am afraid I do not quite understand what “service coding” mean. May I ask you to send your project (or a sample project with the same issue) to our support service? You can find our support email address in the readme.txt file located in the VDProj Converter installation folder.
