Office 365 Newswire: New features of Office 15 to be unveiled – 7.13.2013
It’s another Friday the 13th (F13)! For some reason, an F13 in the middle of Summer just isn’t that scary or notable. Yet… I note it anyways.
Maybe those of you in the southern hemisphere find today a bit spooky. But, around here, with the sun rising around 6am, the only thing that frightens me is the thought of a record Sun spot wreaking havoc on the air conditioning systems.
Office 365 news & editorials!
- Microsoft expected to unveil update to Office suite :: Because Office 365 includes Office desktop apps in many of its plans, this is indeed an Office 365 Newswire-worthy item. Also, this unveiling is expected to occur on Monday and I don’t want until Wednesday to tell you about after-the-fact. Over 1,000,000,000 users await the news with bated breath (or is it baited breath?).
- Microsoft’s Kevin Turner rallies partners to push Office 365 sales :: If you missed Mr. Turner’s keynote, this is good somewhere. The money quote is “[Office] is our collective future.” In the future all software will be subscription-based. Brace yourself.
- Steve Ballmer – Why Microsoft’s lost decade is a myth :: Entertaining. Some of the things Mr. Ballmer said made me laugh out loud… especially his comment that “a broken watch is right twice a day”. I don’t think Microsoft has a bigger cheerleader than Mr. B. Be sure and read the 2nd and 3rd pages because Ballmer makes some honest statements (from his point-of-view) about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
- Event Report: Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 :: As I mentioned Wednesday in the Office Newswire, I don’t go to the WWPC. Thanks to reports like this one, I am up-to-speed on the “goings on”.
- Microsoft tries to sweeten Office 365 deal for partners :: Microsoft, after signing up an undisclosed number of accounts themselves, are now throwing partners a bone. Partners can now directly bill clients for Office 365. This change allows partners to 1 ) manage the client relationship and 2) bundle other services within a single invoice. Oh, there is also the important matter of a higher margin in the first year.
- Google Apps v. Office 365 summary: Which is better? :: This is the final chapter of a multi-part series covering different features of the cloud offerings. Who won? I won’t tell… which explains why I am not displaying the Office 365 Scoreboard today. Let it be a surprise.
- Microsoft starts slamming Office 365 door on Google Apps :: It’s been a year since its release and Office 365 is now stealing Google Apps’s mojo. I had to look up the rule about that “apostrophe+s”. My instincts were correct.
- Microsoft’s Roskill: Our clouds beat Amazon, Google Apps :: An interesting Q&A. Mr. Roskill praises Microsoft PinPoint before discussing cloud topics. His comments on PinPoint leave me scratching my head. When I ask around at local partner gatherings, I don’t hear good things about PinPoint.

Office 365 developer items of note
- Building integrated Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint Online, and Office 2010 solutions using BCS and LOB Data :: Great stuff from Donovan Follette. This is a presentation he gave at Tech Ed North America. It’s 1 hour and 20 minutes of highly technical goodness combined with solid high-level explanations.
- Using the Windows 8 Simulator & VS 2012 to debug the IE10 touch events & your responsive design :: Windows 8 requires us (developers) to change how we build apps. That is, if we want to build Metro apps. So start reading and start learning.
- My essential development tools :: I’m always interested to know what other developers find useful. I bet you do too.
- Debug and deploy sandbox webparts to SharePoint Online site :: Just in-case you don’t know.
